Initiative .. Managment lesson
Employee "A" in a company walked up to his manager and asked what my job is for the day? The manager took "A" to the bank of a river and asked him to cross the river and reach the other side of the bank. "A" completed this task successfully and reported back to the manager about the completion of the task assigned. The manager smiled and said "GOOD JOB"
Next day Employee "B" reported to the same manager and asked him the job for the day. The manager assigned the same task as above to this person also. The Employee "B' before starting the task saw Employee "C" struggling in the river to reach the other side of the bank. He realized "C" has the same task. Now "B" not only crossed the river but also helped "C" to cross the river. "B" reported back to the manager and the manager smiled and said "VERY GOOD JOB"
The following day Employee "Q" reported to the same manager and asked him the job for the day. The manager assigned the same task again. Employee "Q" before starting the work did some home work and realized "A", "B" & "C" all has done this task before. He met them and understood how they performed. He realized that there is a need for a guide and training for doing this task. He sat first and wrote down the procedure for crossing the river, he documented the common mistakes people made, and tricks to do the task efficiently and effortlessly. Using the methodology he had written down he crossed the river and reported back to the manager along with documented procedure and training material. The manger said "Q" you have done an "EXCELLENT JOB".
The following day Employee "O' reported to the manager and asked him the job for the day. The manager assigned the same task again. "O" studied the procedure written down by "Q" and sat and thought about the whole task. He realized company is spending lot of money in getting this task completed. He decided not to cross the river, but sat and designed and implemented a bridge across the river and went back to his manager and said, "You no longer need to assign this task to any one". The manager smiled and said "Outstanding job 'O'. I am very proud of you."
What is the difference between A, B, Q & O? Many a times in life we get tasks to be done at home, at office, at play.,
Most of us end up doing what is expected out of us. Do we feel happy? Most probably yes. We would be often disappointed when the recognition is not meeting our expectation. Let us compare ourselves with "B". Helping someone else the problem often improves our own skills. There is an old proverb (I do not know the author) "learn to teach and teach to learn". From a company point of view "B" has demonstrated much better skills than "A" since one more task for the company is completed.
"Q" created knowledge base for the team. More often than not, we do the task assigned to us without checking history. Learning from other's mistake is the best way to improve efficiency. This knowledge creation for the team is of immense help. Re-usability reduces cost there by increases productivity of the team. "Q" demonstrated good "team-player" skills,
Now to the outstanding person, "O" made the task irrelevant; he created a Permanent Asset to the team.
If you notice B, Q and O all have demonstrated "team performance" over and above individual performance; they have also demonstrated a very invaluable characteristic known as "INITIATIVE".
Initiative pays of everywhere whether at work or at personal life. If you have initiative you will succeed. Initiative is a continual process and it never ends. This is because this year's achievement is next year's task. You cannot use the same success story every year. The story provides an instance of performance, where as measurement needs to be spread across at least 6-12 months. Consequently performance should be consistent and evenly spread. Out-of-Box thinkers are always premium and that is what everyone constantly looks out for. Initiative, Out-of-Box thinking and commitment are the stepping stone to success.
Initiative should be lifelong. Think of out of the box…..Happy Working

Expert Advices for Safety of Women
1) What should a woman do if she finds herself alone in the company of a strange
male as she prepares to enter a lift in a high-rise apartment late at night?
Experts Say: Enter the lift. If you need to reach the 13th floor, press
all the buttons up to your destination. No one will dare attack you in a lift that stops on every floor.
2) What to do if a stranger tries to attack you when you are alone in your
house, run into the kitchen.
Experts Say: You alone know where the chili powder and turmeric are kept.
And where the knives and plates are. All these can be turned into deadly
weapons. If nothing else, start throwing plates and utensils all over.
Let them break. Scream. Remember that noise is the greatest enemy of a
molester. He does not want to be caught.
3} Taking an Auto or Taxi at Night.
Experts Say: Before getting into an auto at night, note down its registration
number. Then use the mobile to call your family or friend and pass on the
details to them in the language the driver understands .Even if no one
answers your call, pretend you are in a conversation. The driver now knows
someone has his details and he will be in serious trouble if anything goes
wrong. He is now bound to take you home safe and sound. A potential attacker
is now your de facto protector!
4} What if the driver turns into a street he is not supposed to - and you
feel you are entering a danger zone?
Experts Say: Use the handle of your purse or your stole (dupatta) to wrap
around his neck and pull him back. Within seconds, he will feel choked
and helpless. In case you don’t have a purse or stole just pull him back
by his collar. The top button of his shirt would then do the same trick.
5} If you are stalked at night.
Expert Say: enter a shop or a house and explain your predicament.
If it is night and shops are not open, go inside an ATM box. ATM centers
always have security guards. They are also monitored by close circuit television.
Fearing identification, no one will dare attack you.
After all, being mentally alert is the greatest weapon you can ever have ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hate Bajaj Allianz Life Insurance .. Review
I am a middle class salaried employee.I invested in Bajaj Allianz Life Insurance to save tax in 80 CC and to get life coverage.

- Agent told me the plan which i invested is very good and it can give returns more than bank fixed deposit.
- I started investing Rs 4000 every quarter into a Plan called 'Bajaj Allianz New UnitGain Plus' with 'Partial Permanent Disability ' and 'Accidental death benefit' riders and fund is 'Equity Growth Fund'
- Starting from the first month my investment started decreasing , it gave me -ve returns
- Bajaj Allianz has so many conditions for address change etc also.
- I was awaiting for 3 years lock in period to complete so that i can withdraw my money.
- i paid around Rs 64000 and they paid me finally around Rs.49000 which is around 24% loss to my principal.
- Most interesting part is i submitted my Policy surrender document on 31st March 2012 which was on a holiday. They told me that they would consider next working day 2nd April 2012 Nav
- I recieved my ECS payment on 12th April 2012 considering the NAV value of 9th April which got me around Rs 400 loss.
- When i called to the call center they gave a reply saving that as i submitted on 31st march 2012 which was year end and their systems are designed such that will not take next working day automatically because of year end activity.
- I had to do a couple of follow ups to get my Rs 400 back in check.
- I only lost few hundrend rupees but their might be people losing thousands so my advice is be carefull when you surender or never invest with Bajaj Allianz.

Understanding EPS - Employee Pension Scheme
If you have looked at your EPF (Employees’ Provident Fund) details you might have wondered about deduction of Rs. 541 per month from your company’s (employer's) contribution to EPF.
Here is the explanation:
• Every month you need to contribute 12% of your basic salary to your EPF account
• Your employer also needs to contribute 12% of your basic to your EPF account. But this part is split into two -
• EPS (Employee Pension Scheme) – 8.33% of your basic salary goes towards EPS, subject to a maximum of Rs. 541 (i.e. 8.33% of Rs. 6,500)
• The rest of the amount goes into the EPF account.
EPF & EPS Calculation:
Here is an example of how EPF & EPS is calculated:
Suppose your basic salary Rs. 10,000 per month.
• 12% of basic is deducted from salary i.e. 12% of 10,000 = Rs. 1,200
• 12% of basic is contributed by employer i.e. 12% of 10,000 = Rs. 1,200
• Total contribution to EPFO = Rs. 2,400
• Out of total Rs. 2400, Rs. 541 goes towards EPS (Employees’ Pension Scheme) and the rest i.e. (2,400 – 541) = Rs. 1,859 goes towards EPF account.
Since the basic salary is more than Rs. 6,500, only 8.33% of Rs. 6,500 (i.e. 541) is contributed to EPS.
What is EPF & EPS?
First lets talk about the similarity between both – EPF & EPS. Both are Retirement Schemes compulsory for private company employees (employers with more than 50 employees) and are managed by EPFO (Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation). In case of EPF you get certain percentage interest on your deposits, which are decided by EPFO board every year. Whatever is the amount accumulated in this EPF account by the time you retire, you receive that as a lump sum.
In case of EPS, you get a monthly pension after you retire which is based on a formula. The good thing about this pension is, your spouse/dependents continue to get this monthly pension even after your death subject to certain conditions.
How much Monthly Pension under EPS?
The next logical question is how much pension would you get under EPS scheme? It’s based on a formula:
Monthly Pension = (Pensionable salary X Pensionable service) / 70
• Where Pensionable salary is average of last 12 months basic salary with an upper cap of Rs. 6500 and
• Pensionable service is the tenure of your contribution to EPS.
Calculating Monthly Pension Amount:
For e.g. you join a private sector company at the age of 25 and continue working there till retirement at the age of 60; with your basic salary always exceeding Rs 10,000 per month. Here is what your monthly pension amount would be:
Pensionable salary = Rs. 6,500 [even though your basic salary is Rs. 10,000 but there is an upper limit of Rs. 6,500]
Pensionable service = 60 – 25 = 35 Years
So, Monthly Pension Amount = (6500 x 35) / 70 = Rs. 3,250
You would receive this amount of Rs. 3,250 as your monthly pension for your life time and this would continue even after your death to your dependents.
This brings us to the next question –
Is EPFO justified in paying such a small pension for your contribution of Rs. 541 per month for 35 years?
Let’s do some number crunching and get the answers.
Had your contribution not gone compulsorily into EPS, it would have gone to your EPF (or VPF) account and paid to you in bulk at the time of retirement. Assuming a rate of interest of 8.5% for entire tenure of EPF, the monthly contribution of Rs. 541 for 35 years (or 420 months) would grow to Rs.14,14,147.
You can withdraw this amount and invest in annuity options available with Insurance companies for regular income. Such an investment would give much better returns than this monthly pension of Rs 3250 PM in the given example.

*****An eye opener **********
Ranjan Das, CEO and MD of SAP Indian subcontinent
died after a massive cardiac arrest in Mumbai on Wednesday.
One of the youngest CEOs, he was 42 What killed Ranjan Das and Lessons for Corporate India
A month ago, many of us heard about the sad demise of Ranjan Das from Bandra, Mumbai. He was very active in sports, was a fitness freak and a marathon runner. It was common to see him run on Bandra's Carter Road. Just after Diwali, on 21st Oct, he returned home from his gym after a workout, collapse! d with a massive heart attack and died.
It was certainly a wake-up call for corporate India. However, it was even more disastrous for runners amongst us. Since Ranjan was an avid marathoner ( in Feb 09, he ran Chennai Marathon at the same time some of us were running Pondicherry Marathon 180 km away ), the question came as to why an exceptionally active, athletic person succumb to heart attack at 42 years of age.
Was it the stress?
------------------
A couple of you called me asking about the reasons. While Ranjan had mentioned that he faced a lot of stress, that is a common element in most of our lives. We used to think that by being fit, one can conquer the bad effects of stress. So I doubted if the cause was stress.
The Real Reason
---------------
However, everyone missed out a small line in the reports that Ranjan used to make do with 4-5 hours of sleep. This is an earlier interview of Ranjan on NDTV in the program 'Boss' D! ay Out':
Boss' Day Out:
Ranjan Das of SAP
India .
The Evidence
------------
Last week, I was working with a well-known cardiologist on the subject of ‘Heart Disease caused by Lack of Sleep’. ! While I cannot share the video nor the slides because of confidentiality reasons, I have distilled the key points below in the hope it will
save some of our lives.
Some Excerpts:
-------------
• Short sleep duration ( <5 or 5-6 hours ) increased risk for high BP by 350% to 500% compared to those who slept longer than 6 hours per night. Paper published in 2009. As you know, high BP kills.
• Young people ( 25-49 years of age ) are twice as likely to get high BP if they sleep less. Paper published in 2006.
• Individuals who slept less than 5 hours a night had a 3-fold increased risk of heart attacks. Paper published in 1999.
• Complete and partial lack of sleep increased the blood concentrations of High sensitivity C-Reactive Protein (hs-cRP), the strongest predictor of heart attacks. Even after getting adequate sleep later, the levels stayed high!!
• Just one night of sleep loss increases very toxic substances in body such as Interleukin-6 (IL! -6), Tumour Necrosis Factor-Alpha (TNF-alpha) and C-reactive protein (cRP). They increase risks of many medical conditions, including cancer, arthritis and heart
disease. Paper published in 2004.
• Sleeping for <=5 hours per night leads to 39% increase in heart disease. Sleeping for <=6 hours per night leads to 18% increase in heart disease. Paper published in 2006.
Ideal Sleep
-----------
For lack of space, I cannot explain here the ideal sleep architecture. But in brief, sleep is composed of two stages: REM ( Rapid Eye Movement ) and non-REM. The former helps in mental consolidation while the latter helps in physical repair and rebuilding.
During the night, you alternate between REM and non-REM stages 4-5 times.
The earlier part of sleep is mostly non-REM. During that period, your pituitary gland releases growth hormones that repair your body. The latter part of sleep is more and more REM type.
For you to be mentally alert during the day, ! the latter part of sleep is more important. No wonder when you wake up with an alarm clock after 5-6 hours of sleep, you are mentally irritable throughout the day (lack of REM sleep). And if you have slept for
less than 5 hours, your body is in a complete physical mess ( lack of non-REM sleep ), you are tired throughout the day, moving like a zombie and your immunity is way down ( I’ve been there, done that ).
Finally, as long-distance runners, you need an hour of extra sleep to repair the running related damage.
In conclusion:
--------------
Barring stress control, Ranjan Das did everything right: eating proper food, exercising ( marathoning! ), maintaining proper weight. But he missed getting proper and adequate sleep, minimum 7 hours. In my opinion, that killed him.
If you are not getting enough sleep ( 7 hours ), you are play(!)ing with fire, even if you have low stress. Respect and work through the day hours nature has given us for work. Observe other species and its habits. No day working species do jobs late nights. We are destroying ourselves with our so called intelligence because we don’t know where to draw the line. Respect Nature.
I always took pride in my ability to work 50 hours at a stretch whenever the situation warranted. But I was so spooked after seeing the scientific evidence last week that since Saturday night, I ensure I do not even set the alarm clock under 7 hours. Now, that
is a nice excuse to get some more sleep.
Unfortunately, Ranjan Das is not alone when it comes to missing sleep. Many of us are doing exactly the same, perhaps out of ignorance. Please forward this mail/article to as many of your colleagues/friends as possible, especially those who might be short-changing their sleep

My visit to VFS office in Hyderabad for UK
VFS office for UK visa is located in Banjara Hills. Banjara hills is a big area so if you don’t have the address handy you will confuse with the location like me. Many people cannot guide you as it is bit confusing.
Address is Sunil Chambers, 8-2-542/A Road No. 7 Banjara Hills, Hyderabad 500 034
To be more specific about the address it is in the lane opposite to GVK Mall. If you follow the route you will end near VFS office. It is above the More super market and opposite to Government school.
Working hours are 08:00 to 14:00 from Monday to Friday.
Some important points to be noted are
1.You have a photographer inside the VFS office. So if you have any problem with the photos which brought you can take a picture immediately.
2.There are 4 document verification counters and 2 counters where they take your thumb impressions.
3.Ireland VFS collection centre is also in the same office.
4.They may ask you to pay Rs.100 for getting sms of your passport status, Which i feel is unnecessary as we can track it online.
5.You can track online starting the next day using the number provided by them after submitting.
6. You can buy some mobile sim connections like Lyca which i feel is good. Lyca and libra are 2 connections in UK which provide good offers for calling India.(Example 1 GBP = 100 Mins to India)
You can start using your mobile phone in UK with Lyca connection which you can buy in VFS office. I suggest this is better for the business travelers.
7.It will take minimum 3-4 hours once you’re in VFS office.
8.You don’t have ample parking for vehicles so it is better to park near opposite government school.
9.There is no need to panic / frightened as the VFS people are there to help us in the process.
10.You have small HDFC bank counter .
11.If your taking infants take enough food, tell the people in counter that you have infants so that they can take care of you in a faster way.
Hope this helps you while applying for UK visa in VFS office.

Lessons from a corn farmer
There was a prosperous farmer in the US who was very famous for bagging the "Best Corn Grower" award every year. A journalist approached him and asked him the secret of his success. The farmer replied he joyfully shared the secret of growing the best corn with all his neighbouring farmers. He even gave them the best quality seed and taught them the techniques to grow the best corn.
The journalist got confused and asked "If you share the secret of your success with all your neighbours, are you not inviting competition?"
The farmer replied: "If I want to have the best quality corn, I must have some good quality corn growing in the neighbouring areas because the wind will carry the pollen that will cross pollinate with the corn buds in my farm and help me produce the best corn. If my neighbours corn is of inferior quality, then my corn cannot be of the best quality inspite of all my efforts"
The journalist said: "That makes a lot of sense; but are you not inviting competition?"
The farmer replied: "There is no question of competition because I know that most people are selfish and will not share the secret of their success with their neighbours. So my neighbours neighbour may not grow the good quality corn and hence my neighbour's corn cannot be superior to mine !!!"
Therefore, success cannot happen in isolation. If you want to succeed, you must help your neighbours, friends and relatives to succeed.

Ra.One --- My review
I went to Ra.one movie in Talkie Town near miyapur.
I had many expectations from the movie but the movie let it down. The movie didnt reach to my expectations at any point of time.
Some points which make me let it down
1. Death of Shah Rukh Khan
2. Fights between SRK and villan
3. Train adventure
4. Comedy track misses
5. Songs
SRK should have done more home work.'ROBO' picture from Rajnikanth was far better that 'RA.One'.
This is second movie which became hit because over hype after 'Dukudu'
This a good managment lesson.

Little Boys Prayer ..Government taxes
A little boy wanted Rs.50 very badly and prayed for weeks, but nothing happened.
Finally he decided to write God a letter requesting the Rs.50.
When the postal authorities received the letter addressed to God , INDIA , they decided to forward
it to the President of the India as a joke.
The President was so amused, that he instructed his secretary to send the little boy Rs.20.
The President thought this would appear to be a lot of money (Rs.50) to a little boy,
and he did not want to spoil the kid.
The little boy was delighted with Rs...20, and decided to write a thank you note to God,
which read:
"Dear God: Thank you very much for sending the money.
However, I noticed that you sent it through the Rashtrapati Bhavan(President House) in New Delhi, and those donkeys deducted Rs.30 as tax ....... "

Thought to Ponder About - Why is No one Happy?
Yesterday, I was driving, and the FM radio went off for few seconds. I thought, I should have an iPod. Then suddenly I realized that I have not used my iPod in last 6 months. And then, more things, Handy cam in last 2 years, Digital Camera in last 2 months, DVD player in last 1 month and many more. Now I can say that I bought that Handy cam just out of impulse, I have used it twice only in last 4 years.
So, what's wrong and where? When I look at myself or my friends I can see it everywhere. We are not happy with what we have but all are stressed and not happy for the things we don't have. You have a Santro, but you want City; You have a City, but you want Skoda. Just after buying a new phone, we need another one. Better laptop, bigger TV, faster car, bigger house, more money, .I mean, these examples are endless. The point is, does it actually worth? Do we ever think if we actually need those things before we want them?
After this, I was forced to think what I need and what I don't. May be I didn't need this Handy cam or the iPod or that DVD player. When I see my father back at home. He has a simple BPL colour TV, he doesn't need 32" Sony LCD wall mount. He has a cell phone worth Rs 2,500. Whenever I ask him to change the phone, he always says, "Its a phone, I need this just for calls."
And believe me; he is much happier in life than me with those limited resources and simple gadgets. The very basic reason why he is happy with so little is that he doesn't want things in life to make it luxurious, but he wants only those things which are making his life easier. It's a very fine line between these two, but after looking my father's life style closely, I got the point. He needs a cell phone but not the iPhone. He needs a TV but not the 32" plasma. He needs a car but not an expensive one.
Initially I had lot of questions.
I am earning good, still I am not happy,...why ?
I have all luxuries, still I am stressed.... ....... why ?
I had a great weekend, still I am feeling tired...... why?
I met lot of people, I thought over it again and again, I still don't know if I got the answers, but certainly figured out few things. I realize that one thing which is keeping me stressed is the "stay connected" syndrome. I realized that, at home also I am logged in on messengers, checking mails, using social networks, and on the top of that, the windows mobile is not letting me disconnected. On the weekend itself, trying to avoid unwanted calls, and that is keeping my mind always full of stress. I realized that I am spending far lesser money than what I earn, even then I am always worried about money and more money. I realized that I am saving enough money I would ever need, whenever needed. Still I am stressed about job and salary and spends.
May be, many people will call this approach "not progressive attitude", but I want my life back. Ultimately it's a single life, a day gone is a day gone. I believe if I am not happy tonight, I'll never be happy tomorrow morning. I finally realized that meeting friends, spending quality time with your loved one's; spending time with yourself is the most important thing.
If on Sunday you are alone and you don't have anybody to talk with, then all that luxuries life, all that money is wasted. May be cutting down your requirements, re-calculating your future goal in the light of today's happiness is a worthwhile thing to do. May be selling off your Santro and buying Honda City on EMIs is not a good idea. I believe putting your happiness ahead of money is the choice we need to make.
I think, a lot can be said and done but what we need the most is re-evaluation of the value of happiness and time we are giving to our life and people associated with it.
Think about it.

Santa to Satisfy Female Gorilla
The Zoo acquired a female of a very rare species of gorilla. Within a few weeks, the gorilla became very cantankerous and difficult to handle.
Upon examination, the Zoo vet found the problem. The female Gorilla was on heat and there were no male gorillas of the species available. It came to the Zoo management's attention that one of their employees, Santa Singh, possessed ample ability to satisfy a female of any species.
So the Zoo administrators approached Santa with a proposition.
Would he be willing to have Sex with the gorilla for Rs. 50000?
Santa showed some interest but said he would have to think the matter over carefully.
The next day Santa announced that he would accept their offer, but only under three conditions:
First, "I don't have to kiss her."
Second, "You must never tell anyone about this"
&
Third, "I WILL NEED AT LEAST ONE WEEK TO ARRANGE THE Rs. 50000!"

Applying Passport for your baby in Hyderabad - my experience
The best way to apply passport for your babies less than 5 years is to apply through eseva centre or main post offices in hyderabad.
This is my experince.
I applied passport for my son who's age is 1 year through the eseva center in kukatpally on 04/10/2010 by paying around rs 600 DD from state bank of India. The eseva charges around Rs 100 extra for providing this facility.I produced his birth certificate, parents address proof etc. They will give a receipt with file number which we can track from www.ap.nic.in/passport
After 1 month the police verification started, local police from special division visited my house and verified the details.By the way he was asking questions i expected he was asking for bribe. But i didnt pay it as i had all the documents perfectly.
Then i got a letter(post card) from passport office enquiry report has reached the main passport office.Letter was dated on 10/11/2010.
After 1 month i finally got my son's passport.
All the best for your babies passport.

FRUITS AND HUMAN BODY - CANCER CELLS
BROCCOLI CANCER
Close-up, the tiny green tips on a broccoli head look like hundreds of cancer cells. Now scientists know this disease-busting veg can play a crucial role in preventing the disease. Last year, a team of researchers at the US National Cancer Institute found just a weekly serving of broccoli was enough to reduce the risk of prostate cancer by 45 per cent. In Britain, prostate cancer kills one man every hour.
